Movie Trailer - Putting All Together Second Attempt

I was interested why information text is on the green screen at the beginning of the most to days trailers.
I did research and found that Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) change of the design was part of their new “Check the Box” campaign (Slate - Forrest Wickman, 2011). The font they using for a text was Gotham, however this font is commercial so  alternative is Montserrat font, which is free and I could use in my trailer. Bellow in the images can be seen fonts and first attempt and second attempt for first clip text.

Movie Trailer - Putting All Together First Attempt

All one minute trailer will be from three sections: start, middle/action and end. Start section will have three clips, middle will have seven clips and end section will have two clips. At the first I will explain how my trailer is created and later I will describe how I did use effects.

New Project Settings

In the image bellow is shown popup when open Adobe Premier. There I did chose "New Project", to create my new work space and new project.

New Project
Second popup have two tabs "General" and "Scratch Disks". General tab is to set up display, audio and capture formats, direct location and give name to a project.
Shown in the image bellow.

New Project Settings
The "Scratch Disks" tab lets you save project files and data to wanted location. Default it saves where is project location. Please see image bellow.

New Project Settings
Third popup lets you set sequence format and name. By assignment we should make widescreen video, DV-PAL, 25fps (fps - frames per second) video. My new project setting shown in the image bellow. Because my project has same setting as we need to export video by assignment, that make for me easier to to build trailer and export.

New Project Sequence Settings

Start Section

In this section I have created two text titles and one clip which is aligned with couple more clips, effect and text. The first clip is title which says for what audience is this movie and second says usage rights. First clip have "Zoom" effect to enlarge text and between first and second clips there is "Cross Stretch" effect to swap clips nicely. Both two first clips are on the green color matte, it was done after watching a lot of newest official trailers, it seem like some style which follow a lot of film studios. In the image bellow can be seen material layers and self clip.

Start Section First Clip

The third, or last in start section, clip is more complicated. At the first as video one I did use slow splashing water which looked great as background video. Then video where recorded myself behind having green background, I did use "Ultra Key" effect to make all green color transparent and see water as my new background. Bellow show two images, the first one is disabled "Ultra Key" effect and second is enabled.

Disabled Ultra Key Effect
At the left side of image bellow, is shown "Ultra Key" effect settings. I did set up high transparency level, because the green color of my video was in bad light, so mixed up with white color.

Enabled Ultra Key Effect

As you can see in the image bellow there are three text titles, which was attached to this clip and setup-ed to appear in the sequence top, left and then right. That was done placing all those clips on different video lines, Video 1 is water, Video 2 is clip with me, Video 3 top text, Video 4 left text and Video 5 is right text.

Five video, Ultra Key effect, water and text titles

Middle Section

The middle section is built from the six clips which was cut from different videos (references will be provided later) and one color matte. Can be seen in the image bellow.

Middle Section Clips
The first clip is longest in this section and have "Dip to White" effect together with start section last clip. Between all clips apart one in middle section at the ends and starts with lowered or increased connector line using "Keyframes", that effect makes clips at the ends slowly get back or dark and at the starts from black or dark get to normal state. Only between second and third clip is "Dip to Black" effect, which in this situation didn't made any different of using reduced "Keyframes", just was interesting to use bit more different effects and check how would they act. However "Dip to Black" effect can be do things which cant be done with "Keyframes", for example make overlapping clips each other, depending on settings. Black color matte was used to extend dark period when on the clip five all city lights goes off and I wanted to keep darker bit for longer.

End Section

The first clip of end section is cut off from the movie and has overlapping text title which has information about producers, presenters and movie name. The second clip is more like image in the left side of the screen imported from Photoshop, which is DVD paper sleeve front and has overlapping text title which is moved to the left side and is rolling from off screen bottom to top of the screen. In the images bellow you can see clips videos and screen shot of how it looks.

End Section Clips
End section first clip and overlapping text title has setup-ed "Keyframes" to give affect to clip to start from dark to normal view.

End Section First Clip

End Section Last or Second Clip

Text Roll
To make text rolling, requires to select text to roll and press button which is highlighted  in the red color at the image bellow.

Roll button highlighted in red color
Then select required options, my is shown in the image bellow.

Roll/Crawl Options

Dissolve series effects

The three main dissolve series effects used by me was "Dip to Black", "Dip to White" and "Cross Dissolve".
Dip to Black is good to use when you wan clip to finish slowly darkening or between two clips, that one clip will finish darkening and following clip would start from dark and slowly would get to normal view.
Dip to White exactly same  as "Dip to Black", just it dips not to black color, but to white.
Cross Dissolve is when you want that for example one clip would move re-sizing to smaller to left side and following clip would move to from re-sizing till normal view. This effect was used in the first section between first and second text titles.

Dissolve effects

Zoom

Zoom effect enlarges clip or text, for example in my trailer is the firs effect used in the first clip of the start section.

Zoom effects

Wipe (Inset)
Inset effect is of the wipe series effects, in my video is used between two last clips. This effect makes following clip to start in left top side and slowly enlarge covering previous clip. Can be seen in the image bellow.

Music & Sounds

In my trailer there was used five different audio track as sounds and one long music track. There was used only two Audio lines. Music track name is "Decision", format mp3, source (Incompetech, 2013) and is covering start and middle sections Audio 2 line. At the end music track have reduced "Keyframe" to slowly reduce volume, this I did to swap nicer music to following sound. In the middle section first three clips have original clip sounds on the Audio 1 line. The first sound have reduced "Keyframe", I did this that the music would gently increase sound, that way audience will not get chocked and and it look more professional. The second audio track if from the same video as first so that sound like extension of the first audio track did not required any "Keyframe" modification. The third audio track is original to clip, but because at the start it have big boom sound when ship hits wave, I did increase "Keyframe" at start to make that hit very loud and give attractive effect, then volume goes to normal to hear music track on Audio 2 line. At the end "Keyframe" reduced to get volume slowly lower, that swapping to the next audio track would be nicer. The next, fought, audio track is from completely different clip, original was replaced to this audio track because it better matches with my video and background music. It has increased at the start and reduced at the end "Keyframe" to make sound start nicer and slowly get quiet. In the end section music at Audio 2 line not playing. For all end section was used end section first clip sound, because it have rain sound and really sounds good to cover clips where is show information. In this audio there is no changes in "Kayframes" to make audience understand that trailer video part where presenting movie is finished and completely changes atmosphere from previous show, so audience can relax and read information.

Music and Sounds

Render Entire Work Area

When adding effects, transitions or doing any other changes to the sequence, those changes are not permanent and those changed clips have highlighted in the color, so requires rendering. Rendering is good to increase speed of video when you added a lot of effects, titles and other things (Kdmcberkeley, 2012). For example on the start section of my video on the clip three where is water video, video with me using "Ultra Key", then three titles, this clip was really slow and miss frames on preview when is not rendered, however after render entire work area preview become in proper speed without any missed frames. To render "Sequence -> Render Entire Work Area". Render shown in the image bellow.

Before rendering

After rendering

Exporting Video

The Adobe Premier project file is not the same as video coded with codec, which could be simply watched in the video players having right codec. By assignment I need to export video using "QuickTime" codec which file extension *.mov. So to start exporting I need to select video sequence in the right side upper tile, then "File -> Export ->Media". Shown in the image bellow.

Start Exporting
In the windows "Export Settings" I can choose format which by assignment is "QuickTime", preset "PAL DV Widescreen", I did not write any comment, then changed output name and a path where file should be exported. There could be done many more changes, however I do no need by assignment. For example I could change source scaling in the left side top, but because my video project have same setting as I exporting video, my video is already in right scale and it does not have any black borders around.

Export Settings
Video Preview Web Version

Video bellow is my trailer which I exported in a low resolution and file extension *.flv. Was done stretch to fit, because exporting size was different than trailer sequence. Lower resolution and correct format make possible to view my trailer "A Chance To Survive".

Brain Storming for Movie Trailer

Video

At the first trailer should start with information can see this trailer and legacy of using it. Because I need to use "Key" effect, I will do second scene with my self on some background behind me. My idea is to show some appearing text about movie and my self will be related with it. Third is to put some clip cut outs from flood and disaster movies and add effects. At the last 10 seconds I will need to put some end scene in a length 5 seconds saying who produced this movie and a name of movie. Last 5 seconds I will use to show DVD case papers sleeve from "Photoshop" and nice text which would show release date.

Audio

Only cut out clips from flood or disaster movies will have some sound. The music will be as second audio stream which will play on the most clips changing it volume higher or lower.

Effects

Effect I plan to use is mainly from "Dissolve" range, for example "Cross Dissolve", "Dip to Black", "Dip to White". Those effects will be used between scenes where will require to jump from one clip to another. I will need to use "Ultra key" effect, where I plan to record my self, then using this effect remove background surrounding me. For sure I will use titles on which I will show different fonts, sizes, places and rolling.

DVD Label - Putting All Together Second Attempt

After me and my tutor over viewed  my work at the first attempt, we decided that big wave on the DVD label would look better if would not be cut at the end.

DVD Label - Putting All Together First Attempt

Background

At the first I did create new layer, then using "Rectangle Tool" I did draw big blue square and covered DVD disk. On the top of this square using "Flare Tool" I did draw some nice circles. Flare effect was used on the same layer as blue square, because all those shapes and effects belong to background, this way is easier to edit objects and separate from other objects in other layers. Result can be seen in the image bellow.

(screen shot from Adobe Illustrator)

Title

After watching video from the source (YouTube - Marty Daley, 2009), I started next steps in development. In the middle of label I did draw smaller circle using "Ellipse tool" and holding Shift key on the keyboard. Shift key make ellipse, square and other shapes correct size of sides.  Then using "Scissors tool" I did cut this circle in the half and separated them. Shown in the image bellow.

(screen shot from Adobe Illustrator)

Using "Type on the path tool" I did write "A Chance" on the top half circle and "To Survive" on the bottom half circle. Top half circle text was easier to set, just needed change font type and size, then move text in the middle. The bottom half circle text was more complicated to set how it look in the image bellow. At the first I did set up need font type, size and moved it to the middle. But because text was from left to right, I moved text to inner side of the bottom circle and then "Character panel" I changed setting "Baseline shift" to get text in the position out side bottom circle. Result can be seen in the image bellow, to have more clear vision background layer was disabled.

(screen shot from Adobe Illustrator)

Starting next steps I did remove word "top" from bottom text and moved to top text, giving more space for bottom text.
The top title text color was changed to white and in "Transparency" panel opacity was changed to 80%.
For the bottom text I did use (Youtube - Bleachksudiud, 2014) tutorial. To expand text to object I selected bottom text and used Object -> Expand (Ok), then pressed right mouse button and ungroup to get every single letter as a separate objects. At the first I did select first three letters "SUR" and changed their color gradient "Fading Sky" effect. Selected four letters "VIVE", changed gradient to linear and selected different colors. Then added white color stroke to those four letters. For the first three letter "SUR" border line was added two times, expanded and ungrouped, and opposite, this way I did managed to get double border lines. At the end "Suvive" text was copied dragging it with mouse and holding key Alt. Copied text background was changed to dark blue, arrange setup ed to "Send Back" and moved under original "Survive" text, that last action gave look like there is special shade under text.

(screen shot from Adobe Illustrator)

Waves around the label

Using "Pen Tool" I did wave effect around the DVD label. At the first I chose blue color stroke and 5pt weight. Then putting anchor points at similar distances and playing with handles positions I managed to create vector type blue wave effect. The waves length is one quarter, then other three quarter was copied, turned around, connected with their end and grouped as one object. In the image bellow can be seen overall result and that his waves object is on separate layer to edit it easier.

Big vector wave

Using (tuts+, 2010) tutorial I did learn how to create some stylized waves, using the Pathfinder, Envelope Distort with Mesh and various Gradients. I did also learn how to use Scatter Brushes to create the foam effect. In the image bellow you can see the wave I did and after I will describe how I did it.

1st Step

Created new document size 50mm x 25mm. Using "Rectangle Tool" I did draw blue rectangle covering all document size. Then dragged a lot of horizontal guides from the top ruler that they could arbitrarily transit the created rectangle. Then using mouse and "Selection Tool" (V) I did select all guides and blue rectangle, other way to select every thing is holding keyboard key Ctrl press A.
Pathfinder menu
When everything is selected, in "Pathfinder" menu I did press "Divide" function, which did cut rectangle in to slices same width but different heights, by guides.

All slides I did un-group pressing right mouse button and selecting "Ungroup" option. Second step was to select some slices and change their color to lighter blue, with other selected slices color was changed to darker blue, then selected another slices and I put linear gradient and at last with the rest slices I did put radial gradient. All this can be seen in the image bellow.

2nd Step

All slices I did convert to one object with Mesh using "Envelope Distort -> Make with Mesh", the simpler the gradient mesh is, the easier the object can be deformed.
Using "Direct Selection Tool" (A) and moving the handles of anchor points I started making object to look as a wave. Can be seen in the two images bellow.

Started changes

Finished the wave
3rd Step

Created another blue linear gradient rectangle using "Rectangle Tool" and send it backwards to look like background of the wave. After finished creating background I did start building new "Brush Tool" shape. So I created new layer and I did draw two circles using "Ellipse Tool" (L). Then selected those two circle and in "Pathfinder" menu I did press "Minus Front" function, which did cut smaller circle in the bigger circle. Then opened "Brushes" in Windows -> Brushes, and dragged the circle to "Brushes Panel". Then saved brush as "Scatter Brush". Can be seen in the image bellow.

Creating new brush
New brush setting can be seen in the image bellow.

New brush settings
4th Step

Using new type of object in brush which I created before, I did draw a lot of different stroke size bubbles. This effect gave to wave life and action effect. Then this waves with bubbles was grouped and transferred to my project DVD label separate layer.

Logo

Using the wave which I created before and before starting to draw bubbles, I have created another wave and did different deformation to it. Using new type of object in a brush which I created before, I did draw a lot of different stroke size bubbles. This effect gave to waves life and action effect, this can be seen in the image bellow.

Two waves and bubbles

Using mouse and "Selection Tool" (V) I did select all object in the project, other way to select every thing is holding keyboard key Ctrl press A. When everything is selected I did press "Object -> Clipping Mask -> Make. This action was done to get all object inside with the range of blue rectangle(background). The result can be seen in the image bellow.

Used clipping mask
Then using "Type Tool" and changing background and stroke color, stroke size and character type I did write my logo text "M&M" which is my initials.

Logo project

In the image bellow you can see wave which was created before and transferred to main DVD label project and changed transparency. Near to the big wave is my logo which was transferred to DVD label same layer as the big wave.

Look of main project wave and logo

Final

In the image bellow you can see my DVD label with all object, just not in "Clipping Mask".  To make "Clipping Mask" in the size as DVD label, on the new layer I did draw correct ellipse(circle) holding Shift key on the keyboard same size as DVD label bleeding guide and moved it over bleeding guide.

DVD label without clipping mask

To create a clipping mask I did select all objects and pressed right mouse button on them and selected "Make Clipping Mask". In the image bellow can bee seen final first attempt DVD label.

Technical specifications and layout

The company which does disc production, recommends 12cm ‘half face’ printing labels measure 117.5mm in diameter, although they recommend having a 4mm bleed around all edges of the label, including the central cut. The label that design should therefore be 125.5mm diameter and produced at a resolution of at least 300dpi for best results. (Wizbit, 2013)

(Wizbit, 2013)

In the image bellow is my first layout with the guides which have sizes by Wizbit recommendations.
