Movie Trailer - Putting All Together First Attempt

All one minute trailer will be from three sections: start, middle/action and end. Start section will have three clips, middle will have seven clips and end section will have two clips. At the first I will explain how my trailer is created and later I will describe how I did use effects.

New Project Settings

In the image bellow is shown popup when open Adobe Premier. There I did chose "New Project", to create my new work space and new project.

New Project
Second popup have two tabs "General" and "Scratch Disks". General tab is to set up display, audio and capture formats, direct location and give name to a project.
Shown in the image bellow.

New Project Settings
The "Scratch Disks" tab lets you save project files and data to wanted location. Default it saves where is project location. Please see image bellow.

New Project Settings
Third popup lets you set sequence format and name. By assignment we should make widescreen video, DV-PAL, 25fps (fps - frames per second) video. My new project setting shown in the image bellow. Because my project has same setting as we need to export video by assignment, that make for me easier to to build trailer and export.

New Project Sequence Settings

Start Section

In this section I have created two text titles and one clip which is aligned with couple more clips, effect and text. The first clip is title which says for what audience is this movie and second says usage rights. First clip have "Zoom" effect to enlarge text and between first and second clips there is "Cross Stretch" effect to swap clips nicely. Both two first clips are on the green color matte, it was done after watching a lot of newest official trailers, it seem like some style which follow a lot of film studios. In the image bellow can be seen material layers and self clip.

Start Section First Clip

The third, or last in start section, clip is more complicated. At the first as video one I did use slow splashing water which looked great as background video. Then video where recorded myself behind having green background, I did use "Ultra Key" effect to make all green color transparent and see water as my new background. Bellow show two images, the first one is disabled "Ultra Key" effect and second is enabled.

Disabled Ultra Key Effect
At the left side of image bellow, is shown "Ultra Key" effect settings. I did set up high transparency level, because the green color of my video was in bad light, so mixed up with white color.

Enabled Ultra Key Effect

As you can see in the image bellow there are three text titles, which was attached to this clip and setup-ed to appear in the sequence top, left and then right. That was done placing all those clips on different video lines, Video 1 is water, Video 2 is clip with me, Video 3 top text, Video 4 left text and Video 5 is right text.

Five video, Ultra Key effect, water and text titles

Middle Section

The middle section is built from the six clips which was cut from different videos (references will be provided later) and one color matte. Can be seen in the image bellow.

Middle Section Clips
The first clip is longest in this section and have "Dip to White" effect together with start section last clip. Between all clips apart one in middle section at the ends and starts with lowered or increased connector line using "Keyframes", that effect makes clips at the ends slowly get back or dark and at the starts from black or dark get to normal state. Only between second and third clip is "Dip to Black" effect, which in this situation didn't made any different of using reduced "Keyframes", just was interesting to use bit more different effects and check how would they act. However "Dip to Black" effect can be do things which cant be done with "Keyframes", for example make overlapping clips each other, depending on settings. Black color matte was used to extend dark period when on the clip five all city lights goes off and I wanted to keep darker bit for longer.

End Section

The first clip of end section is cut off from the movie and has overlapping text title which has information about producers, presenters and movie name. The second clip is more like image in the left side of the screen imported from Photoshop, which is DVD paper sleeve front and has overlapping text title which is moved to the left side and is rolling from off screen bottom to top of the screen. In the images bellow you can see clips videos and screen shot of how it looks.

End Section Clips
End section first clip and overlapping text title has setup-ed "Keyframes" to give affect to clip to start from dark to normal view.

End Section First Clip

End Section Last or Second Clip

Dissolve series effects

The three main dissolve series effects used by me was "Dip to Black", "Dip to White" and "Cross Dissolve".
Dip to Black is good to use when you wan clip to finish slowly darkening or between two clips, that one clip will finish darkening and following clip would start from dark and slowly would get to normal view.
Dip to White exactly same  as "Dip to Black", just it dips not to black color, but to white.
Cross Dissolve is when you want that for example one clip would move re-sizing to smaller to left side and following clip would move to from re-sizing till normal view. This effect was used in the first section between first and second text titles.

Dissolve effects

Zoom

Zoom effect enlarges clip or text, for example in my trailer is the firs effect used in the first clip of the start section.

Zoom effects

Wipe (Inset)
Inset effect is of the wipe series effects, in my video is used between two last clips. This effect makes following clip to start in left top side and slowly enlarge covering previous clip. Can be seen in the image bellow.

Music & Sounds

In my trailer there was used five different audio track as sounds and one long music track. There was used only two Audio lines. Music track name is "Decision", format mp3, source (Incompetech, 2013) and is covering start and middle sections Audio 2 line. At the end music track have reduced "Keyframe" to slowly reduce volume, this I did to swap nicer music to following sound. In the middle section first three clips have original clip sounds on the Audio 1 line. The first sound have reduced "Keyframe", I did this that the music would gently increase sound, that way audience will not get chocked and and it look more professional. The second audio track if from the same video as first so that sound like extension of the first audio track did not required any "Keyframe" modification. The third audio track is original to clip, but because at the start it have big boom sound when ship hits wave, I did increase "Keyframe" at start to make that hit very loud and give attractive effect, then volume goes to normal to hear music track on Audio 2 line. At the end "Keyframe" reduced to get volume slowly lower, that swapping to the next audio track would be nicer. The next, fought, audio track is from completely different clip, original was replaced to this audio track because it better matches with my video and background music. It has increased at the start and reduced at the end "Keyframe" to make sound start nicer and slowly get quiet. In the end section music at Audio 2 line not playing. For all end section was used end section first clip sound, because it have rain sound and really sounds good to cover clips where is show information. In this audio there is no changes in "Kayframes" to make audience understand that trailer video part where presenting movie is finished and completely changes atmosphere from previous show, so audience can relax and read information.

Render Entire Work Area

When adding effects, transitions or doing any other changes to the sequence, those changes are not permanent and those changed clips have highlighted in the color, so requires rendering. Rendering is good to increase speed of video when you added a lot of effects, titles and other things (Kdmcberkeley, 2012). For example on the start section of my video on the clip three where is water video, video with me using "Ultra Key", then three titles, this clip was really slow and miss frames on preview when is not rendered, however after render entire work area preview become in proper speed without any missed frames. To render "Sequence -> Render Entire Work Area". Render shown in the image bellow.

After rendering

Exporting Video

The Adobe Premier project file is not the same as video coded with codec, which could be simply watched in the video players having right codec. By assignment I need to export video using "QuickTime" codec which file extension *.mov. So to start exporting I need to select video sequence in the right side upper tile, then "File -> Export ->Media". Shown in the image bellow.

Start Exporting
In the windows "Export Settings" I can choose format which by assignment is "QuickTime", preset "PAL DV Widescreen", I did not write any comment, then changed output name and a path where file should be exported. There could be done many more changes, however I do no need by assignment. For example I could change source scaling in the left side top, but because my video project have same setting as I exporting video, my video is already in right scale and it does not have any black borders around.

Export Settings
Video Preview Web Version

Video bellow is my trailer which I exported in a low resolution and file extension *.flv. Was done stretch to fit, because exporting size was different than trailer sequence. Lower resolution and correct format make possible to view my trailer "A Chance To Survive".
